What is Wu Ji Quan?

Wu Ji Quan is one of the oldest traditions of internal martial arts and originates from the folk traditions of China. With prehistoric roots reaching back more than 3,000 years, it is neither Daoist nor Buddhist in origin. However, it was adopted into the Shaolin monastic tradition by Bodhidharma, the first patriarch of Chan Buddhism and one of the most important figures of the Shaolin legacy, due to its unique benefits for body and mind. Within Shaolin, Wu Ji Quan was cultivated for the development of inner essence, meditation, healing, and martial skill.

The first two forms, Yin and Yang, establish the foundation for the higher forms such as Wind, Clouds, Rain, Sky clearing and Sun. These initial seven forms clearly reflect natural phenomena and their transformations: beginning from Wu Ji, the infinite potential, Yin emerges as the complement to Yang, whose dynamic energy gives rise to wind, continuing the cycle of evolution.

Later forms embody further expressions of nature – Sun and Moon, Lake, Reflection, Stream, Current, Rapids, River, and finally Ocean.

Benefits of practicing Wu Ji Quan

Wu Ji Quan is a powerful tool for stress relief, mental clarity and overall wellbeing. Its purpose is to strengthen the practitioner’s energy field, quiet the mind, and develop the capacity for healing oneself and others.

Dr. Ortwin Lüers

Dr. Ortwin Lüers is a psychiatrist and psychotherapist based in Berlin, specializing in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder and chronic stress-related conditions in both clinical and outpatient practice.

His engagement with Eastern traditions began at an early age, when he developed a lasting interest in martial arts, meditation, and Buddhism. Since the 1980s, he has devoted himself to intensive study and practice of Buddhism.

In 1985, Dr. Lüers met a Western student of Grandmaster Chee Kim Thong, which marked the beginning of his practice in the inner styles of the Southern Shaolin tradition, including Wu Ji Quan, Nei Gong, and Qi Gong. In 1990, he met Grandmaster Chee in person and was accepted as a disciple. From then until the Master’s passing in 2001, he had the rare and invaluable opportunity to train within a small circle of German and Swiss students, participating in intensive training camps under the direct and personal guidance of this extraordinary teacher.
