Please login for access. Login

The first episode from my new series, THE MARTIAL MAN – My Journey. This video discusses my history training in martial arts, revealing my first introduction to Chinese Kungfu almost 20 years ago. I also explain why a 2-day trip to Bangkok lasted four years, the martial arts I have learned since living in Asia, how I started The Martial Man YouTube channel, and much more!

I will continue releasing new episodes each week detailing my martial arts journey. I will discuss my experiences meeting and training with various masters during my travels filming for my channel and my personal experience transitioning from an external to an internal martial art.

Responses

  1. Excellent video and very insightful. I didn’t realize you had such a colorful background and experience in training wing chun and muay thai. Please continue producing these types of videos and sharing your journey kieren.

  2. tks a lot for this video, eager to see the next one, if you can on the next videos discuss as well the similarites that you seen the the internal martials arts would be very great, your content is amazing for people that always looked for this type of information.

  3. Great!
For the fact that you (understandably) don’t like to reveal private
things in public, you were then very open about these things.
Somewhat surprising after your introductory words 😉
Since I “know” you only as this friendly and quiet man,
your story is also very surprising at first moment.

Thanks for sharing your life experience, now I’m really excited to see
what else is to come (and I wasn’t so much before this video).
And finally I know the correct pronunciation of both names 😉

  4. You are an enlightenment man in the martial arts field, help the martial arts world have a good chance to reach the real wisdom knowledge in martial arts, you show the way to the TAO of martial arts, display applications the brutal forces on the visible martial arts into the invisible empty forces of energy, harmony the physical and soul become one with the universe …..Hope you bring more new martial arts emty-force , stun electricity force like yellow baboo in Indonesia into our field . To reveal the real from the fake one … Thanks

  5. Kieren, all I have to say is wow! This video is the first video I wanted to start with in your Martial Man Library. As a huge fan, I have watched every video you shared on your YouTube channel and I know next to nothing about you and I have been very curious about your knowledge and experience in Martial arts. This video did not disappoint. I get a lot about what you went through in your younger years and even though I am from the states, we have some similarities in our backgrounds. I was a very troubled child/teen and now adult. My rebellious ways against my fellow classmates and authority figures however were more due to me being Bipolar as well as other mental health issues. I had been trained for a summer in 4th grade learning Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Karate which didn’t do anything for my temperament and when I was in 7th grade the school psychologist suggested to my parents another child psychologist he knew who could temper my rage and anger issues with private lessons learning Aikido which he did on the side. Over the decades I have loved and practiced many Northern and Southern Shaolin styles including Wing Chun, Mantis, Hung Kuen, Pak Mei, etc. and have switched over to the internal arts since 1998 when I hit my 30’s. I studied Yang Style with Yang Jwing Ming for a few years and then studied some Chen style with students of Chen Zhonghua before learning a bit of Hebei Xing Yi and Liang style Baguazhang. Now due to the pandemic I have been isolated and unable to practice with anyone. I still have incredible anger issues I wish I was free of but keeping isolated has been a major plus for me personally. The less contact I have with others the better for me. Unlike you however I have been lucky not to have had any real violent encounters. The last physical fight I had outside of sparring in class, was back in middle school. I see a kindred spirit in you and I am very glad to have found you online. Thanks to you I have joined not only this incredible Library, but the course here on Yan Shou Gong and I have also joined Nima King’s Mindful Wing Chun Online School. I am also seriously considering Adam Mizner’s Heaven Earth Man Online Taijiquan School as well. Keep up the excellent work. I am extremely grateful to you for making all these rare teachings possible for me to learn and study. Cheers mate!

    1. Hi Billy, thank you for sharing your background and your kind words.
I can resonate with much of what you described. Unfortunately, the current situation with the pandemic has undoubtedly not helped, and as you mentioned, it has restricted our options to train with partners. Still, hopefully, it will all be resolved soon.

I’m planning to film a new episode to describe the “character transformation” I went through, as it’s something that’s been requested several times. It is easy for me to explain the “effects” but not the “causes”; however, I will release a video detailing it in the coming months.

I’m happy to hear you’re enjoying the courses on this website. Thank you for your support

      Best regards,
      Kieren.

  6. I’m so glad to have subscribed to this content. This is exactly what I’m going through my mind between developing my practice or gaining “strength.” My job requires me to have a high level of fitness as well as being tested on it routinely. Also while I don’t feel horrible about how I look, I do have that nagging voice about what can be.

    1. Thank you for subscribing. I believe, in the end, it all comes down to finding balance and doing what makes you the most comfortable and happiest. Please keep us updated on your progress.
