  • What is Fa Jin?

Fa Jin 發勁 – the ability to suddenly issue force into the opponent or send them flying backward is undoubtedly a controversial skill. However, although the methods and expressions of issuing differ between the different arts, Fa Jin is practiced in most Chinese martial arts, both the internal and the external.

When training with my teacher, he will often remind me that what we are practicing is not “issuing” (Fa); instead, it is “releasing” (Fang). First, the opponent’s root is lifted and disconnected from the ground, removing their ability to make power; they become seized, unable to change (Na), and then they’re released (Fang), often causing them to fly backward suddenly. So, although it may appear you used Fa Jin to the outsider, it is actually Fang Jin. Regarding “Fa Jin,” that is something else.
